It’s the end of a rather long, surreal and productive day.
Started by running into one of the new skaters at work. He just happened to be there and walked past me with his unmistakable ginger hair. He’s so new I don’t remember his name so I shouted “hey you, long hair guy”, of course he kept walking. And as would become the theme of the day - I ran after him.
I had just finished a meeting and someone informed me that we had two days holiday because of our Queen’s silver jubilee! I had no idea. Really pleasant surprise. So of course I had to make a bank holiday slide jam. But I would need a poster.
Turns out ginger is a graphic designer! How fortuitous. So he sits down and cooks up a nice poster. Boom. There and then. Stood over his shoulder and dictated for a bit. Fun.
After which I shook his hand and disappeared.
Had a nice long chat about Thane, and as Keith walked away another longboarder tried to get his attention - by staring really hard at the back of his head/apex 37, then as he was turning away, I could only think to shout “hey longboard guy”, he could only walk away. So of course I gave chase. Caught him at the top of the stairs. Not long after ginger shows up again and I introduce them.
And then by the power of our collective longboardiness, we managed to get ANOTHER longboarder to materialise from thin air.
At this point I was ready to pop. Not since the summer of 2010 have so many faces appeared at once. Or actually… That was last week.
This new skater was of the female variety! So I was double keen to engage her in meaningful conversation.
She was walking past our group, but I was confident she would stop. I started with my usual line, she smiled and kept walking.
Oh long Johnson!! I was stunned. Never ever EVER in my 3 years has a longboarder walked away from my presence. I gave my newspaper to ginger, whispered “nobody gets away”, and had to erm… Pursue her down the stairs.
Got her at the bottom and had a delightful conversation about the longboard scene in Köln and the concrete wave shop. Then I told her to find London Longboards on Facebook.
The End.
PS: it’s the 2nd week in a row, I reckon I’ll be bumping into lots and lots of new people this summer.
